After graduating from the University of King's College (BA Classics & Philosophy, 1993), I completed an MA in Classics at Dalhousie (Halifax, Nova Scotia), followed by a PhD at Cambridge, working on Aristotle under the supervision of the eminent Sir G.E.R. Lloyd. Upon returning to the University of King's College as a professor in the Foundation Year and History of Science and Technology Programs, my research took a sharp turn. My interest had been piqued by allusions to Hermes Trismegistus in Pico della Mirandola's Oration on the Dignity of Man. Following this thread, I forged a new path into the mysterious worlds of Greco-Egyptian Hermeticism, alchemy and magic.
I live with my wife, Mary, and our regal (and rather entitled) Manchester Terrier, Oliver, in rural Nova Scotia, not far from the city of Halifax.
